Yeah I guess there’s two different categories of sci-fi in this regard. Personally, I think stuff that’s as far ahead in the future as Star Trek is pretty close to fantasy. But then there’s also the Philip K. Dick style near future dystopian sci-fi that serves more as a warning about the future we’re headed to (or instruction manual if you’re a techbro CEO).

Fantasy is probably the same actually. I usually think happy thoughts if I think about fantasy as a genre but then there’s also stuff like Game of Thrones.

Holy crap I’m not sure I’ve seen that before! Just watched a clip on YouTube and I don’t remember it honestly, even though I’ve seen this show multiple times by now at friends’ houses over the years. That’s hilarious and looks like there’s a missing episode I haven’t seen that I need to watch properly.

Completely unrelated but your title made me think of this scene from Father Ted (YouTube). Although watching this now again years later, it might be more odd than funny if you’re not familiar with the show.

Wait, so in all these years that Europeans have been making fun of dumb Americans for having a two party system, and for having no real left wing options, the UK has been basically the same?

So did this UK “centre-left” party turn out to be a Trojan horse or what? They’ve dismantled trans rights. They plan on using AI thought police to ‘predict’ future crimes and criminals. And now they want multibillion corporations to have free access to anyone’s work without compensation.

If I hadn’t looked this political party up on Wikipedia, by this point I would be assuming that they’re a bunch of conservative wankers on Elon Musk’s payroll.

That’s a good point. The big shift probably also coincides with more of the masses getting online. Back in 2005 I was a Symbian user and we used to laugh at the Apple people paying crazy premium prices for ‘smart’ phones that couldn’t even multitask.

This kinda follows the same pipeline that everyone else went down on Facebook and Twitter. At one point, the internet was all about Anonymous and Zeitgeist and revolution.

Then one Arab Spring and a couple of years later, we all went from Anonymous and Zeitgeist to thinking that billionaires and businessmen are the answers to all of our problems.

I think that this is the thing that’s starting to really get me about this crowd. The pure unashamed hypocrisy and contradictions, accompanied by zero self reflection or awareness.

“I love freedom of speech and expression! Now shut up and get out of my sight, gay people.” “I care so much about the kids, so I’m supporting politicians that want to marry and fuck them.” “I can’t stand these feminazis acting like all men are ok with rape, now excuse me while I listen to the latest sermon from Andrew Tate.” “I’m sick of DEI ruining my precious meritocracy. That’s why I’m voting for an ex reality TV star to be my president and why I’ll defend him putting a news reader in charge of the military.”

I feel like I could actually go on and on and on with more examples of this if I really tried. And I know that we’re supposed to be kinder to these people or some shit, so that they don’t crap in their nappies and their temper tantrums and vote for even bigger pieces of shit next time. But at this point, tell me, how does one view these people as anything other than cruel, profoundly fucking stupid hypocrites?

Adult Star Wars fans when kids try to enjoy the movie with dog people, living teddy bears and elite troopers that can’t shoot straight.

This guy is so behind the curb. Doesn’t he know that the latest fad is NFTs and blockchain AI?

And this one even has a little homophobia sprinkled in.

Wake me up when something gets done about it other than a fine that amounts to about half a day’s profit for them.
