The gloomy sentiment around Reddit Inc. has failed to dissipate after its shares fell 50% from a February high, with volatile technology stocks under pressure.

They’ve banned all of the good people that made up the site. I used to do Secret Santa. For 10 years! And I had mothers thank me for making their kids holidays. And they banned me. Because I made a death joke about how old McConnell was. Dude looks like death walking. Prove me wrong.

I was a good user. Dark humor isn’t hurting anyone. Reddit will die. Just like every other popular site.

I’m not sure why anyone would ever buy Reddit stock. There is no money to be made in Reddit. They failed to make any money before they went public, and they’re failing to make any money now.

They tried the whole NFT thing, failed. They’re trying to sell the data to AI companies but once that’s sold they can’t sell any more of it because the benefit of Reddit data was historical data unpolluted by AI, but new Reddit data is polluted by ChatGPT posts and is therefore worth less.

It’s not even about banning people, it’s about the fact that Reddit was never a sustainable business model from the start, at least not in the traditional capitalist sense where you’re actively trying to make a profit to please shareholders.

The only benefit to owning Reddit stock is if you have voting shares and can manipulate the algorithm to benefit you in some way. Suppress some voices, amplify others to back what you want to do etc. but you need money to burn in order to achieve that because you aren’t going to be making money directly by owning Reddit stock and manipulating public opinion takes time.

If they’d been stalwart about banning automation and keeping original, legit human content pure, they probably could have used it as a fountain of fresh data for AI, for polling, for engagement farming, and for promotion.

The site was still growing even despite the admin induced atrophy. But they just couldn’t resist killing the Golden Goose.

I disagree that Reddit would gain in value over time if they kept banning automation, because it is increasingly difficult to avoid AI-generated material polluting your dataset, no matter how much you avoid automation and try banning it. Inevitably, some AI-generated material is going to get in.

It’s a problem in two ways:

        1. The vast vast majority of data on Reddit has already been sold, so you can’t rely on that data for future revenue
        2. The remaining data that’s current is polluted by AI and is therefore worth less than the historical data because the more AI pollutes your dataset, the more likely it is to lead to Model Collapse, where an LLM is poisoned due to unverified data generated by other LLMs

I am firmly of the belief that sites like Internet Archive will be some of the most valuable companies in the AI space, because they hold an immense amount of untainted data created prior to 2019.

I’m fairly certain they misled investors on their last earnings call. I noticed some banned accounts suddenly had their ban lifted right before the call, and then reapplied right after.

On the last investor call, they said they had a lot of returning users. This was after their election ban hammers, and prior to the Luigi ban fest.

Can’t wait to see how they try to spin things on the next one.

Good. I got banned just today for “inciting violence” then when I asked what I did they couldn’t tell me. Musk pressuring spez into harsher moderation is probably part of why I was actually banned. I followed every rule but was active in left wing communities and it seems that’s enough to be deplatformed under the trump regime.

I had two main accounts. My oldest account got permabanned for a joke about Nick Fuentes. After his address got doxxed and he pepper sprayed a woman who rang his doorbell back in December of last year, I said “hey as an incel he should be happy that the ladies know where he lives now so they can share a cocktail with him”, and I added a cartoon gif of a Molotov. It was obviously a joke, but they said it was “promoting/glorifying violence”. I ate the bullet on that one because they were technically right, even if they were a bunch of humorless twats.

My other account got banned about a month ago when I up voted a comment that was just a picture of Luigi Luigi (the Nintendo character) smoking a cigarette. Again for “promoting/glorifying violence”.

Elon Musk is a weak little crybaby and Steve Huffman is a pathetic coward.

People have been getting warnings that their accounts are in danger of being permanently banned just for visiting certain subs. Not for posting. Not for commenting. Not even for voting. Just for visiting.

a ludicrous ban, is when i got “temp banned for report abuse” turns out if you report too many people who have spreading misinformaiton or lies, you get automatically flagged. the community is keeping the trolls in check, while mods and reddit admins sititng on thier asses of selective moderation.

and we know certain subs, are owned by a few power mods. LEO controls multiude of mods about crime and law subs(this includes the videos subs). askdoc is probably the only sub/medical is correctly moderated, they do it to prevent pseudoscience/ misinformation, one time after '16 election, someone try to analyze Hillaries facial movements as having some kind of stroke(the mods shut that down very quick)

Harsher moderation followed by a bot farm the richest man payed for to report every account that is critical of Nazis.

I’m not even kidding. At this point the amount of comments on Lemmy that I’ve read that had 10+ year old Reddit accounts banned for “inciting violence” is crazy. I was one of them a few months ago. Told a dude denying a Nazi salute was a Nazi salute to “go to hell where Nazis belong”. Was banned within an hour. Permanent and IP/Metadata banned. Instant response of “no” to my unban request.

This is not a unique experience either. Leave reddit like it’s the plague. Digg died because of bad decisions. Reddit seems like it’s gonna become 4chan but for the mainstream. I don’t know if it’ll die. I think they’re purging anyone that has leftist profiles.

Yeah that’s probably for the best. I say this with no judgement as a former WoW addict. It’s the time to do shit in the real world and get organized to resist these Fascist. Hit up PSL (Party for Socialism and Liberation) or DSA (Democratic Socialist of America) in your area. If anything it will give you a social life on Friday/Saturday (usually when they have meetups for PSL in my experience). PSL in my area even organized child care during meetups/protests.

Also, your local SRA (Socialist Rifle Association) if you have one. Basically the only place to train with a weapon that isn’t filled with MAGA hats. But they have literally been overwhelmed since November so might have to deal with hogs in another course if you’re interested in that. Again, depends on your location.

That’s my experience trying to explore real life anyway. Your path might be different. Plenty of mutual aids to join. Lots of local organizations of any kind our leading the charge to resist ICE. Depending on your location that might be a Mosque, Synagogue, Church, Temple, etc. (Thats one of the main reasons they now legally allow ICE to raid them. Which is FUBAR.) Find out what works for you in your area.

    • That live stream nonsense they had a couple of years back

Social media is polarising. Lemmy, for example, and to a lesser extent Reddit, are politically left leaning. Xitter and Truth Social both very right leaning. Across all platforms voices to which do not conform to the status quo are either attacked or silenced. It’s anonymous mob mentality. The human animal was not meant to communicate this way, it’s not healthy, it just creates echo chambers on both sides, spreads misinformation, and is addictive.

However, their owner is a duck so he’s prob gonna atrophy users away, so it’s not an investment you’d go long on.

Reddit has proper moderation. As in actual people moderate it. It basically has a lot of content that was verified by ‘experts’. And they do it for free.

In the age of bots, fake news and AI generated pages Reddit is a pretty good source of actual facts. Search engines lean on it more and more so it means there’s bunch of money in it.

At least that was the plan. If people will stop moderating there because of politics it’s worthless.

That’s actually the main reason most left, Lemmy has never seen a bigger increase in MAU before or after the death of 3rd party apps.

Not to say the other stuff isn’t important, but for me Reddit WAS Apollo. Without it, it didn’t even feel like the same service. Enough people felt the same about their preferred apps that they left en masse in 2023.

Yup, for me it’s Sync. And Sync is doing a decent enough job of bringing me Lemmy content.

I left because once you see that most posts are just commercials and advertising and then you realize how they sell our attention span instead of paying us for it then I left. I don’t work all day just to come home and make someone else money. Cut me in or eat shit.

Not to mention how many posts are made to get you to react viscerally, instead of engage with the community - things like AITA seem especially prone to this.

The Reddit app and site are bloated bullshit. It’s an insult that they want you to use that. Lemmy with Voyager is the experience I like.

Yeah, I came here when they did the API thing. I was spending too much time on reddit anyway, now I’m reading and gaming more in my free time.

That was indeed awful, but I put up with it (and the app even improved a bit over the last year or whatever). The thing that made me finally leave was posts being shadow deleted for simply saying a man’s name and then being threatened with bans for upvoting the “wrong” content. Absolutely not.

I remember when Reddit threads would have 50000 plus comments on the regular that felt like real discussions where karma kept the assholes in control. The front page always felt full of new things and it felt democratic in a way. In recent years it feels empty, algorithmic, and just kind of sad. Reddit felt like a safe place even with some of the grimier subreddit becoming popular. Now it’s just a oligarch pandering Nazi sympathizer platform. I was on there for 12 years and am happy I left it behind.

Sadly i have to be there as its the best place to get news about the place im living in , our newspapers work for our govenment and other channels are usually controlled opposition … reddit is the most trustworthy (its so ironic to tell you that but it is)

I saw more and more recent comment authors had the “closed account” icon before they shadowbannned me. A noticeable uptick in the last two weeks. That wasn’t uncommon to see before, on comments that were years old, but I saw it more and more.

I think they’re using AI to get rid of anyone who’s “too much trouble.” I broke no rules as far as I know. Didn’t glorify violence or bother anyone. But I did talk about politics.

Reading threads from even 5 years ago makes it painfully obvious reddit is dying. Its mostly repost bots now, and the upvoted comments often have the conversations out of order or have generic fortune cookie like responses.
