The gloomy sentiment around Reddit Inc. has failed to dissipate after its shares fell 50% from a February high, with volatile technology stocks under pressure.
The value of Reddit is the content which it is able to create. If users aren’t free to create content, there is not value.
Good. I got banned just today for “inciting violence” then when I asked what I did they couldn’t tell me. Musk pressuring spez into harsher moderation is probably part of why I was actually banned. I followed every rule but was active in left wing communities and it seems that’s enough to be deplatformed under the trump regime.
Holy shit, me too.
They said I threatened violence because in a thread about Putin potentially being sick, I said I wished he had a painful slow death.
Apparently even bloodthirsty dictators get to have their poor feelings protected by Reddit.
Fuck Reddit! I’m just gonna abandon that shit platform
I had two main accounts. My oldest account got permabanned for a joke about Nick Fuentes. After his address got doxxed and he pepper sprayed a woman who rang his doorbell back in December of last year, I said “hey as an incel he should be happy that the ladies know where he lives now so they can share a cocktail with him”, and I added a cartoon gif of a Molotov. It was obviously a joke, but they said it was “promoting/glorifying violence”. I ate the bullet on that one because they were technically right, even if they were a bunch of humorless twats.
My other account got banned about a month ago when I up voted a comment that was just a picture of Luigi Luigi (the Nintendo character) smoking a cigarette. Again for “promoting/glorifying violence”.
Elon Musk is a weak little crybaby and Steve Huffman is a pathetic coward.
sounds like you were part of the ban waves going on. there was one around the election, another around DEC mid, we noticed because reddit was extremely quiet of all propaganda for like a day or 2.
Wait… What?
Sure, the first example is understandable.
The second!? WTF!?
Yeah they’ve come out and said recently that even interacting with any content or comments that could so much as be perceived as being related to Luigi Mangione is a violation of Reddits policies against promoting violence. People have been getting warnings that their accounts are in danger of being permanently banned just for visiting certain subs. Not for posting. Not for commenting. Not even for voting. Just for visiting.
Truly out of 1984.
basically the thought police.
you got brigaded by pro-russian bots, and yes russian backed trolls do mass report people too.
Idek wtf i said lmaoo. Atleast you got told you were deplatformed for daring to disagree with the regime. I just got shown the door. This place seems much nicer though.
a ludicrous ban, is when i got “temp banned for report abuse” turns out if you report too many people who have spreading misinformaiton or lies, you get automatically flagged. the community is keeping the trolls in check, while mods and reddit admins sititng on thier asses of selective moderation.
and we know certain subs, are owned by a few power mods. LEO controls multiude of mods about crime and law subs(this includes the videos subs). askdoc is probably the only sub/medical is correctly moderated, they do it to prevent pseudoscience/ misinformation, one time after '16 election, someone try to analyze Hillaries facial movements as having some kind of stroke(the mods shut that down very quick)
The excuse to ban someone over reporting will never not be hilarious to me. Like dawg, sorry were making you do your fucking job and improve your site.
Well, I had enough of this bullshit, and together with news that Reddit’s CEO was pressured by Musk of all people to curb dissent, I just deleted my accounts.
Bye Reddit.
I’m 100% a Lemmee guy now
I was Permanently banned for harassment because I asked a mod why they banned me.
Mind you, I’d ask, and they’d mute me for a week straight instead of just pointing out what got me banned.
lol I pray for their downfall; this news pleases me.
Some mods are in cahoots with the admins, so they can just exaggerate the seriousness of a report and get people banned.
Harsher moderation followed by a bot farm the richest man payed for to report every account that is critical of Nazis.
I’m not even kidding. At this point the amount of comments on Lemmy that I’ve read that had 10+ year old Reddit accounts banned for “inciting violence” is crazy. I was one of them a few months ago. Told a dude denying a Nazi salute was a Nazi salute to “go to hell where Nazis belong”. Was banned within an hour. Permanent and IP/Metadata banned. Instant response of “no” to my unban request.
This is not a unique experience either. Leave reddit like it’s the plague. Digg died because of bad decisions. Reddit seems like it’s gonna become 4chan but for the mainstream. I don’t know if it’ll die. I think they’re purging anyone that has leftist profiles.
2nd richest, many people believe mr PUTIN IS, AND he does have the largest troll farm in existence(which is the reason why many countries in the mess they are right now. and Musks master is putin, since hes likely funded twitter purchase, musk have been seen with one of putins propaganda chiefs in qatar right after it was bought.
I’m just sad that I’m leaving all the marvel and action figure collector communities i was apart of behind. But yeah I don’t plan on going back. It’s gonna become infested with nazis sooner or later anyway.
Yeah that’s probably for the best. I say this with no judgement as a former WoW addict. It’s the time to do shit in the real world and get organized to resist these Fascist. Hit up PSL (Party for Socialism and Liberation) or DSA (Democratic Socialist of America) in your area. If anything it will give you a social life on Friday/Saturday (usually when they have meetups for PSL in my experience). PSL in my area even organized child care during meetups/protests.
Also, your local SRA (Socialist Rifle Association) if you have one. Basically the only place to train with a weapon that isn’t filled with MAGA hats. But they have literally been overwhelmed since November so might have to deal with hogs in another course if you’re interested in that. Again, depends on your location.
That’s my experience trying to explore real life anyway. Your path might be different. Plenty of mutual aids to join. Lots of local organizations of any kind our leading the charge to resist ICE. Depending on your location that might be a Mosque, Synagogue, Church, Temple, etc. (Thats one of the main reasons they now legally allow ICE to raid them. Which is FUBAR.) Find out what works for you in your area.
You’re probably right. I’m already armed so I’ll probably check out some groups. I’ve been meaning to link up with some irl left leaning groups. Shouldn’t be hard since I’m not far from Chicago.
Absolutely. Good luck comrade
Thanks !
Oh yea the generic “site wide ban message doesnt even tell you what the violation was” i think it gives reddit arbitrary and vague reasoning to ban you.
I really hope the company burns. It became everything it used to make fun of since Spez took over.
I’m not sure why anyone would ever buy Reddit stock. There is no money to be made in Reddit. They failed to make any money before they went public, and they’re failing to make any money now.
They tried the whole NFT thing, failed. They’re trying to sell the data to AI companies but once that’s sold they can’t sell any more of it because the benefit of Reddit data was historical data unpolluted by AI, but new Reddit data is polluted by ChatGPT posts and is therefore worth less.
It’s not even about banning people, it’s about the fact that Reddit was never a sustainable business model from the start, at least not in the traditional capitalist sense where you’re actively trying to make a profit to please shareholders.
The only benefit to owning Reddit stock is if you have voting shares and can manipulate the algorithm to benefit you in some way. Suppress some voices, amplify others to back what you want to do etc. but you need money to burn in order to achieve that because you aren’t going to be making money directly by owning Reddit stock and manipulating public opinion takes time.
its only use now is a propaganda machine, much like X is now, or it will be soon like X.
It’s not even about banning people, it’s about the fact that Reddit was never a sustainable business model from the start, at least not in the traditional capitalist sense where you’re actively trying to make a profit to please shareholders
If they’d been stalwart about banning automation and keeping original, legit human content pure, they probably could have used it as a fountain of fresh data for AI, for polling, for engagement farming, and for promotion.
The site was still growing even despite the admin induced atrophy. But they just couldn’t resist killing the Golden Goose.
the mistake was allowing mods to have too much power, and admins to become mods.
I disagree that Reddit would gain in value over time if they kept banning automation, because it is increasingly difficult to avoid AI-generated material polluting your dataset, no matter how much you avoid automation and try banning it. Inevitably, some AI-generated material is going to get in.
It’s a problem in two ways:
- The vast vast majority of data on Reddit has already been sold, so you can’t rely on that data for future revenue
- The remaining data that’s current is polluted by AI and is therefore worth less than the historical data because the more AI pollutes your dataset, the more likely it is to lead to Model Collapse, where an LLM is poisoned due to unverified data generated by other LLMs
I am firmly of the belief that sites like Internet Archive will be some of the most valuable companies in the AI space, because they hold an immense amount of untainted data created prior to 2019.
Except AI companies are already using data from Internet Archive wholesale with paying them a cent.
They’ve banned all of the good people that made up the site. I used to do Secret Santa. For 10 years! And I had mothers thank me for making their kids holidays. And they banned me. Because I made a death joke about how old McConnell was. Dude looks like death walking. Prove me wrong.
I was a good user. Dark humor isn’t hurting anyone. Reddit will die. Just like every other popular site.
I’m fairly certain they misled investors on their last earnings call. I noticed some banned accounts suddenly had their ban lifted right before the call, and then reapplied right after.
On the last investor call, they said they had a lot of returning users. This was after their election ban hammers, and prior to the Luigi ban fest.
Can’t wait to see how they try to spin things on the next one.
They can just count all them bots as active users. Much like twitter
Fuck Reddit.
Hey cool beans we’re the direct result of that! What good news!
I trust reddit as far as I can throw it these days.
One man’s slowing growth is another man’s hardening growth (me, from reading this headline).
I mean, with all the censoring and pandering to Musk, allowing for entire bot swarms to the point it really becomes obvious it’s happening - who could have predicted this?
That’s right, kids. Allying yourself with fascist tendencies in any way, shape or form will hurt you in the long run. Just provide the damn service people are looking for and stop playing god, trying to use your platform to shape opinions and censor statements you or your buddies don’t like.
Shouldn’t suprise anyone especially with the recent grovelling before Musk.
I’ve created this account here today particularly because I found that behaviour absolutely disgusting.
I wonder how long until they ban porn. That’ll kill it dead for sure.
Idk, I doubt the advertising partners really have a problem with reddit porn. This dip is likely a reflection of the article linking reddit moderation policies to Elon Musk (absolutely hilarious that he’s so toxic to stocks he’s killing other people’s companies now). I don’t think this is even a reflection of a drop in users yet,
People left Reddit during the election. The new left pushing the Luigi good narrative just got spanked and migrated here, and the others that took issue with the retarded policies of the Dems and Republicans were also banned. Basically Reddit pissed off everyone regardless of where they were on the political spectrum. They’re fucked.
It’s got triple digit p/e. The stock is doing fine.
Reddit has never made a profit.
P(rice of stock)/E(arnings)
literally one of the 2 reasons I haven’t quit reddit completely (the other being I’m slowly deleting all my comments)
you can use powersuite delete i believe, and there are extensions, but much slower than the github one.
You can just use a bot/service to do that. It’ll even edit them before deleting them, so if it’s ever recovered it’ll just look like some gibberish random words
someone else linked one called “shreddit”. haven’t really looked at it yet
Tbh I think X has the market corned there.
I just don’t understand why a person would choose to invest in Reddit. What exactly is the value proposition here?
Surely people will enjoy pay walled content.
They source the data for AI.
However, their owner is a duck so he’s prob gonna atrophy users away, so it’s not an investment you’d go long on.
I’m so glad it will create and burn ever since they prevented RIF from working for their own ad-ridden version to be used.
6 months after that, they still didn’t have tablet support. Absolute bullshit.
I discovered the fediverse because I used Boost for porn subs before the API debacle.
A duck?
so huffman and the c-suite can dump thier stock, they did it a while ago.
Reddit has proper moderation. As in actual people moderate it. It basically has a lot of content that was verified by ‘experts’. And they do it for free.
In the age of bots, fake news and AI generated pages Reddit is a pretty good source of actual facts. Search engines lean on it more and more so it means there’s bunch of money in it.
At least that was the plan. If people will stop moderating there because of politics it’s worthless.
Reddit is kinda dead it now
Fuck reddit , its becoming weird being on there … its feels off , like you’re in an uncanny valley not knowing if you are taljing to a bot , a person or a troll
I remember when Reddit threads would have 50000 plus comments on the regular that felt like real discussions where karma kept the assholes in control. The front page always felt full of new things and it felt democratic in a way. In recent years it feels empty, algorithmic, and just kind of sad. Reddit felt like a safe place even with some of the grimier subreddit becoming popular. Now it’s just a oligarch pandering Nazi sympathizer platform. I was on there for 12 years and am happy I left it behind.
Sadly i have to be there as its the best place to get news about the place im living in , our newspapers work for our govenment and other channels are usually controlled opposition … reddit is the most trustworthy (its so ironic to tell you that but it is)
Yes it’s not a nice place right now but tye atmosphere is also a bit weird
I saw more and more recent comment authors had the “closed account” icon before they shadowbannned me. A noticeable uptick in the last two weeks. That wasn’t uncommon to see before, on comments that were years old, but I saw it more and more.
I think they’re using AI to get rid of anyone who’s “too much trouble.” I broke no rules as far as I know. Didn’t glorify violence or bother anyone. But I did talk about politics.
Im watching political subs who are considered radical in the us … they are much more sterile than this time last year
Reading threads from even 5 years ago makes it painfully obvious reddit is dying. Its mostly repost bots now, and the upvoted comments often have the conversations out of order or have generic fortune cookie like responses.
Good, Reddit has no place in the stock market and no amount of enshittification can save them from this fate.
